These are pictures I took last week on a walk down the old railway line (that I wrote about in the post about the Hagley Road). Cities do need their lungs, and greenery can be a reminder that fighting nature is ultimately useless: we can build and build but ultimately the buddleia will take over where the buildings collapse.
I have made this walk in all sorts of conditions: in the dark, and even in the snow. It is a place I go to to reconnect when I need to.
------------------
Do you see the cobbles on the streets? Everywhere you look, stone & rock. Can you imagine what it feels like to reach down with your bones & feel the living stones? The city is built on itself, all the cities that came before. Can you imagine how it feels to lie down on an ancient flagstone & feel the power of the rock buoying you up against the tug of the world? And that's where witchcraft begins. The stones have life, & I'm part of it. - adapted from Terry Pratchett
